Sebeka Wines - South Africa Press Trip

Sebeka Wines - South Africa Press Trip

Sebeka Wines
South Africa Press Trip
(May 12-21)

On May 12th, five editors, two DVPR (Craig Alperowitz and I) members, and the Senior Brand Manager of Sebeka wines embarked on a long and fascinating journey to South Africa. Our goal was to educate and inspire American journalists about the beautiful, exotic and vibrant nature of South Africa’s culture with a fully engaging Sebeka Wine experience.

The trip began in the most stunning and captivating city in South Africa –- Cape Town – and concluded in the renowned Kruger National Park. Geographically, South Africa is located at the southern tip of Africa with Cape Town as its second most populated city. It is surrounded by breathtaking natural monoliths including the celebrated Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, and Signal Hill. As the oldest city in South Africa, it has a rich history immersed in cultural diversity which is evident in its customs, cuisines, art, fashion, music, wines and language. It is truly one of the most awe-inspiring and unique places in the world!

During our adventure, we visited the modern winelands of Swartland, where Sebeka wines are produced, as well as some of the oldest wineries including Klein Constantia, where the group had the fortunate pleasure of tasting the famed Vin de Constance (Napolean’s wine of choice), Groot Constantia and Muratie Estates, where we were treated to an authentic traditional Afrikaner lunch prepared by the matriarch of one of the oldest South African wine families, the Melck Family. At Swartland, editors met Sebeka winemaker, Andries Blake and viticulturalist Klaus Coetzee who demonstrated how Sebeka wines are made and introduced them to South Africa’s grape varietals especially the national grape- Pinotage (a cross between Cinsault and Pinot Noir). Andries gave the group an exclusive preview of Sebeka’s latest varietal to join its portfolio, a Chenin Blanc, which was simply delicious! The group enjoyed getting the sneak peak at Sebeka’s Chenin Blanc which isn’t scheduled to debut in the U.S. until August. Then a quick overview on wine blending followed by a friendly competition where two editors each won a case of their very own Sebeka wine blend!

On one of our excursions, we ventured out to see spectacular natural wonders to understand the geography of Cape Town from the Cape of Good Hope/ Cape Point Reserve, Clifton Beach and Camps Bay, to Chapman’s Peak, and eventually to the Boulders, home of the notorious African penguins. In the evenings, we dined at some of Cape Town’s top 10 restaurants, from the classic La Colombe at Constantia Uitsig, to the exquisite Aubergine, to the chic Jardine, where South Africa’s #1 chef George Jardine greeted the guests and spoke about the restaurant and dishes served. One of the most memorable meals (there were so many!) we had was at the Castle of Good Hope, where noted South African chef, Cass Abrahams prepared an authentic Cape Malay meal from Samoosas, Bobotie, Yoghurt Curry Chicken, to Rose Scented Boeber all paired with Sebeka wines. As a bonus, we all received copies of her published Cape Malay cookbook.

Let’s not forget fashion, art and nightlife -- Cape Town is after all a modern, metropolitan city with a rich, young and vibrant art scene. One of the key characters we met on our journey was Blaise Janichon, founder of Circus Ninja an underground street art collective. He shared insights on what’s happening in South Africa’s alternative art scene and invited us to The Assembly, a fresh musical venue space that he manages. While in Cape Town we also checked out some other really super cool spots like Julep, a local dive bar; Waiting Room, a Capetonian hipster lounge; and EVOL, a funky 80’s club. To experience the local fashion, we held a private fashion event at the 2Inn1 Guesthouse (highly recommend this inn! Ask for Klaus), where we stayed while in Cape Town, and met the hottest new and established designers of South Africa including Themba Mngomezulu, Maya Prass, Stiaan Louw, Craig Native, and Copellia. The group had a chance to chat with the designers and see their fashions on some of South Africa’s beautiful runway models. During one of our daytrips, we visited a local organic market in Biscuit Mill, where local craftsman showcased their creative work through food, crafts, and fashion.

The final leg of the trip was the icing on the cake. Not only did we stay in the most luxurious accommodations at Camp Jabulani and enjoy enchanting sundowners in the bush, but we had the chance to go on an elephant-back safari tour, feed raw meat to a rare King Cheetah named Tom, pet cheetah cubs, see exotic wildlife such as giraffes, rhinos, and zebra, as well as meet one the most fascinating wildlife conservationists, Lente Roode at her Hoespruit Endangered Species Centre near Kruger National Park. We even met the cheetah that started it all, Sebeka, the namesake of Gallo’s South African wine import and the symbol of hope for wildlife conservation. It
